The BSMA Story So Far

October 2018
After creating a registry of Somali medics, Drs. Zakariye Ashkir, Abdifatah Mohamud, and Sakaria Ali establish the British Somali Medical Association (BSMA) and together with Dr. Samira Hassan and Dr. Guled Adan form the first BSMA Committee.
April 2019
The BSMA runs its first International Medical Graduates (IMG) course led by Dr. Hafsa Ahmed (IMG Lead), helping Somali doctors trained abroad adapt to the UK healthcare system.

The BSMA holds its first community-focused event, a mental health workshop in Birmingham led by Dr. Samira Hassan (Vice President and Community Lead).
December 2019
The BSMA hosts its Launch Gala Dinner in London, attended by over 150 Somali medics, marking a significant milestone for the association.

The BSMA launches a COVID-19 media campaign to provide critical support and information to the UK Somali community.
April 2020
The BSMA's activism on COVID-19 within the Somali community gains international recognition, making headlines worldwide for its impactful work.
May 2021
The BSMA introduces its Scholars' Programme, led by Dr. Sumaya Gurhan (WP Lead), to support Somali students pursuing careers in medicine.

The BSMA hosts its first post-COVID Gala Dinner and Award Ceremony at the Royal College of General Practitioners in Central London.

July 2023
The BSMA launches its first Resident Doctor Teaching Programme, supporting early-career doctors in their professional growth.

The BSMA holds its inaugural National Academic Conference, attended by over 200 Somali doctors, medical students, and allied healthcare professionals.
